With the discovery of House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, announcing that she will bring the controversial topic of Climate Change to the House’s Chamber I felt the immediate need to express my concern. It is about time that Madam Speaker bring the topic to the table, after all scientists have only been debating the issue for how many years now? and being that she is the Representative of one of America’s most heavily polluted states, I knew a light had to go on one day. I applaud Madam Speaker for finally addressing this issue and going through whatever channels she’s had to go through. From what I’ve read, it appears as though she had to step over the shoes of some of her com rads, but this is a sign of leadership and her taking control of what the Committee assigned to Climate Change has NOT been doing.
President Obama recently called out for all Americans- “Young and old,” to get out there and volunteer! I understand his message and its about time- but with all do respect Mr President, we’re in a recession, and your quick call to get everyone out there volunteering (working without any monetary benefits) is slightly contradicting. Message to the President: “Don’t go out and bail- out these companies providing their CEO’s with these luxurious bonuses and tell the Middle Class citizens to get out there and work for that warm feeling at the end of the day, when John and Sally and crying because they can’t afford their mortgage.” Let’s get real for a moment here. I know your hearts in the right place, but its certainly not telling me or my fellow citizens that you care about our monetary safety at the moment.
I mentioned the President’s recent call to Americans, because I find it absolutely astonishing that he has yet to comment on Pelosi’s step to discuss Climate Change in the House. Climate Change should be a priority. Let’s get our priorities straight Mr President. If we have no healthy atmosphere, we have no jobs- not even “volunteer” opportunities.
Back to Climate Change, I am very happy the House has finally decided to label it properly, “Climate Change.” Because that is exactly what it is. It is NOT Global Warming. Global Warming is a very common misnomer- indicating that the world is ONLY heating, when in fact we are experiencing heating and cooling periods… Is there a difference? Yes there is. When we have part of our world cooling and the other warming, and then climates shifting- there’s a hefty difference.
The House needs to sit down as a team, united, without all the liberals one- sided and the right- wingers on the other side in the discussion of this topic. The last thing we need are calls for biased judgement in any actions taken towards Climate Change. Speaker Pelosi should call the House to order, bring in scientists from every research center in the US and other nations, tell the House to listen and then debate. The first step to any issue is educating yourself- formerly on it, and then addressing it. A five- page briefing will simply not cut it, sorry Representatives.
Following, Speaker Pelosi should call for any suggestion from the floor and allow the scientists to debate on the issue with the Representatives. Though sadly, when they break for lunch- I can guarantee that there will be a handful of our Representatives outside smoking a cigarette, only making our “Climate Change” issue HEALTHIER!
As passionate I am about the environment, I am really proud to see some efforts being taken- although still in the early stage- for the American legislators to get out there and address the topic of the Century. I think its about time we acknowledge the issue professionally, intelligently, and compassionately, and in proper decorum. When I say proper decorum, I mean that we need our Representatives to understand the reality of it and that it is indeed a real issue.
I hope to see the House discussing Climate Change in depth in the very near future, and I applaud Speaker Pelosi for enacting the gears.
Let’s get back on the right track.
